The Mowgli's & Terraplane Sun at The Satellite

Show: The Mowgli's and Terraplane Sun
Venue: The Satellite- Silverlake, CA
Date: 2/11/13
Show #6

Last week I had the pleasure of seeing (yet again) 2 of my favorite local bands, The Mowgli's and Terraplane Sun at coincidentally one of my favorite venues, The Satellite. The Mowgli's have the Monday night residency this month, which in case you didn't know, means free shows every Monday! So if you're 21+, I highly suggest you make it over to Silverlake to check out a show.

I got to the show late but I made it just in time to see the last song by opening band, Coyol (@COYOLmusic) and they made me wish I had gotten there sooner to see more! They have that folk/revival sound of the moment mixed with good ol' indie rock. At first glance, an unlikely duo, but the 2 lead singers voices could not be more different but compliment each other extremely well. Below is a video I recorded from the show, but to hear more from these guys, check out their Bandcamp page.

After Coyol was Terraplane Sun, which if you follow me on Twitter (@TheFanFiles) you probably already know how big of a fan I am of these guys. I've seen them more times than I can remember, but each time I do it's even better than the last. They're a blues rock band from Venice Beach, CA, and have played with such bands as Alabama Shakes and Imagine Dragons. Their eclectic sound, mesmerizing musicianship, undeniable swagger and good looks are what set them apart from the pack.

I recorded a video of their new song "The Weekend", which I instantly fell in love with. Check it out below:

After Terraplane Sun came The Mowgli's. The first time I actually saw both the Mowgli's and Terraplane was at The Mowgli's album release party last May at The Roxy. Clearly I had a good time at that show and I've come back for more.

The Mowgli's have have had quite the eventful year since I first saw them that night at The Roxy. They have since been signed to Photo Finish Records, performed on Jay Leno, and released their official video for "San Francisco". They're even going to be performing this Thursday on Jimmy Kimmel Live. They're a bunch of extremely talented, kindhearted individuals who go by the motto "Love's not dead" and I'm so excited to see all of their success unfolding. You can't help but dance your way through a Mowgli's show, they're always a great time!

They also performed a new song!

For a good chunk of the show I was about 6 inches from a Mowgli at any given moment. I was front row against the stage of a packed Satellite, and Colin and Michael loved to stand on the monitor that was directly in front of me which made for some fun photos. At one point Colin even took my camera (you can see below I got a shot of him reaching for it) and tried to take some photos from the stage, but unfortunately couldn't get any shots off, bummer!

All American Rejects' Album Release Party

Show: The All American Rejects' Album Release Party
Venue: Silverlake, CA
Date: 3/26/12
Show #17

Monday March 26th marked the release of the new album "Kids in the Street" by The All American Rejects and I could not have been more excited! These guys are in my top 5 in terms of favorite bands, if not one of my favorite (besides the Backstreet Boys, let's be real) to see live.

To celebrate the release, they hosted an album release party that was open to fans! All you had to do was email an RSVP to an email address they posted, and boom, you're in. They advertised it as a chance to come take a look at the album art work, and actually said nothing about the guys even being there, so I went into this having no idea what to expect. What the night actually ended up being, I never would have expected!

It took place in a gallery in Silverlake, which when you walk in looked rather small, and was plastered with Kids in the Street posters.

Then you continue walking and there's a huge room in the back where the bulk of the art work was. They even had a station where they were screen printing posters for free! It's a really cool poster I ended up getting signed by all the guys, which is now framed in my living room.

The cool thing about this exhibit was that all the art work was submitted by fans!

Then the guys came out! They actually just came out into the crowd and talked to everyone. It was so cool to see them just want to go hang out with the fans. They all seemed really excited to be there and happy to talk to everyone. It even got to the point where Nick came up to my friends and I just to say hi (again) and see what was up because he had talked to everyone already but still wanted to hang out haha! They're all a bunch of the sweetest guys you'll ever meet.

Tyson even took a picture with all of us wearing our Kids in the Street masks!

As if the open bar (with a hilarious bartender who whipped up an amazing drink we deemed "party in a cup"), free food, posters, art work and just hanging out with the guys wasn't enough, they even put on a little show! Needless to say this turned out to be a pretty awesome night!

Here's a video I took of them performing "Fast & Slow"

Voxhaul Broadcast at The Sattelite

Show: Voxhaul Broadcast
Venue: The Sattelite (formerly Spaceland), Silverlake, CA
Date: 3/19/12
Show #11

On Monday night I went to see Voxhaul Broadcast for their 3rd week into their month long residency at The Sattelite in Silverlake. I've seen these guys a few times, I believe the first time was when they opened for Rooney a while back. They really resonated with me when I saw them that first time, and I've seen them a few times since, each great. They're an indie rock group from Orange County. They released an album last year called "Timing is Everything" and I highly recommend checking it out. "Leaving on the 5th" is my favorite.

The Sattelite isn't my favorite place to see a show because of the poor sound quality and lack of stage lighting, so unfortunately this time seeing the guys isn't one of the better performances I've seen. I know they're better than what I saw that night. Either way, still glad I went. Here a few shots from the show.
